Swan works with the theme of transformation. She is symbolic of graceful change in the face of an uncertain future. As a power animal, discovered in a shamanic journey, she revealed to me how being open and surrendering is a strength. If you have found yourself at this page, meeting this version of Swan, perhaps there is a reason. Power animals help you re-connect to your instinct. Swan teaches you to find your inner grace in the changing times. Give yourself grace to change, to be imperfect, and to be loved.

Swan Between Realms

When Swan appeared to me in my meditation journey, I was surprised to see her as I have never really understood her symbolism. But in honoring her with this painting, I am starting to recognize her wisdom. She is of both water and air. She expands into the space and allows the elements to carry her forward into the future. You don’t see her work, and yet you cannot deny her power. She transforms with elegance and fiercely protects her creations. She knows her right to exist.

In my mind there is an Imagination Palace. It is a place hidden to the world and filled with beauty. I sit in the rooms and wait for paintings to reveal themselves to me. I let the light filter in through stained glass windows, and leaves from the hanging plants tickle my shoulders. Feathers dust the floor as birds gather in the beams over my head. They produce fully finished paintings and hang them on the wall in front of me, waiting for me to turn them into tangible realities.

Citrus is an endless theme in my work. Something about the vibrancy of the colors, how they can shine like a light when there is a darker background. Movement is an interesting concept when it comes to still life paintings, and the composition itself can create action and that is what I wanted for this piece. I used the illusion of fabric-as-water to play a central role in connecting the elements of the painting.

Small teapot. Little mugs. Plant clipping sprout unexpectedly out of your openings. An invitation to tea maybe, but more like an invitation to share in the simple abundance that a friendship can offer. Where, out of the shadowy depths of solitude, one can emerge to find connection that is both beautiful and nourishing.

The vase sits right on the edge of a simple one-line-shelf, the glass reflects a projection that is out of your view, and a plant, that keeps its color despite being clipped, breaks up the monotony of blue with dashes of red. It is not lighting up the darkness, but it offers anchor points in an ocean of feeling.

What I love about a good conversation is that it offers more to be said at a later date. A bright conversation balances statement with suggestion, curiosity with truth, depth with levity. The solid, rectangular strokes in this piece speak to the unfinished lines of the second mug, the curious reach of the lavender bridges the divide between light and dark, the boldness of color and solidity of the objects sit floating in air. Not all conversations can have this kind of nuance, but my favorite ones do.

Writing to you from an Ocean away… oh the longing that comes from being a small boat on a large ocean. The longing for a new future and the longing for what you might be leaving behind, and the adventure that exists beneath you in the present moment! Nostalgia can exist, mingled with excitement and anticipation, as well as a sense of deep craving for connection.

And what to say about the fabric of existence, how our very beings came from the Ocean, this tapestry of life that continues to push us forward in our evolution! And yet, we can’t help but look back at where we have come, reaching out with new stories to those who aren’t a part of our present journey but might still feel close through the written word.

TO CONFORM OR TO REBEL.

BUT WAIT.

MORE OPTIONS:

TO CONFORM WITH GRACE OR RESENTMENT.

TO REBEL WITH LOVE OR HATRED.

TRANSMUTATION.

CAN I TAKE THE STRUCTURE AND USE IT

TO BUILD EDGES AND VERGES

AND DAMS AND EMBANKMENTS,

SO THAT NEW TRUTH

NEW EXPRESSION

CAN FLOW THROUGH THE PASSAGE OF LIMITED TIME?

COLLABORATION.

I FOUND YOU IN THE VAST SKY OF MY OWN LONGING.

AND, IN YOU, I SAW MYSELF.

BUT NOT THE SELF I THOUGHT I KNEW.

AND FROM THAT NEW PLACE OF BEING,

I GAVE BIRTH TO THAT WHICH WAS UNCONSCIOUS,

AND RECOGNIZED THE GIFT OF DUALITY.
